Slow motion : economic crisis and mobility (Dutch)
The current economic crisis has influenced traffic and transport in the Netherlands. This report details the changes that have occurred in 2008, as compared to 2007, regarding car mobility and congestion, in the aviation sector and freight transport. A perspective for the coming years is also outlined.
This report is available in Dutch.
No major effects on congestion levels were apparent in the second half of 2008, although in an economic scenario in which world trade in 2009 sharply declined and has not yet recovered in 2010, traffic congestion could decrease by 8 and 3 percent, respectively. In 2009, traffic volumes decreased by a ½ percent. In 2010, slight growth occurred. Since the last quarter of 2008, the aviation sector has clearly been in decline. Air freight especially experienced a sharp decrease, and in 2009 further decreases in passenger aviation and air freight are expected. For international road transport, the number of journeys has sharply declined. The outlook for road freight transport presents a sobering picture. For the entire second half of 2008, the combined turnover of all road freight transport companies was negative. For container transporters, 2009 will be a difficult year, with volumes decreasing by 7 to 12 percent on key international routes.
