Shared mopeds have less environmental impact than petrol mopeds and cars, particularly through a lower climate impact. If we include all life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the impact of shared mopeds per passenger-kilometre comes out to be about half that of petrol mopeds. The production of electric mopeds, and the batteries and electricity required for them, releases particulate matter and toxic substances. Because this production often takes place outside densely populated areas or abroad, relatively few people in the Netherlands are exposed to it. Shared moped rides can bring environmental benefits if they replace car trips but lead to more environmental damage if they replace walking or cycling trips.
