Single inhabitants of the Netherlands use public transport more often and cars less often than non-singles. Singles are here defined as single-person and single-parent households. Access to a car and having a driver’s license plays an important role in this. Singles do have a much lower chance of car ownership in their households. They also have longer travel times partly because of this, and moreover, they are (slightly) less positive about the accessibility of certain amenities. Singles generally live closer to those amenities because they live more often in more urban environments. KiM Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis compares in the publication 'Going solo' the travel behaviour and travel options of single and non-single inhabitants of The Netherlands.
