Long-distance Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), a form of fast and reliable bus service between cities, could help reduce congestion on freeways if they succeed in attracting car commuters to switch to the bus for the whole or part of their trip. This requires complementary parking measures in city centres, and the availability of intermodal transfer hubs on strategic locations. Long-distance BRT often makes use of freeways, and may need special use lanes to allow the bus to bypass congestion. These are some of the insights from the study 'An exploratory review of long-distance BRT combined with special use lanes and mobility hubs' by KIM Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis.
