Railway reliability and robustness (English summary)

Railway reliability encompasses much more than simply whether trains arrive too late at their destinations. At issue are also the occupancy rates of the delayed trains, train cancellations and the effects on the entire door-to-door travel chain. Other issues that must also be considered include: the conditions under which journey times can significantly vary and the fact that many passengers leave home earlier in order to minimise any possible adverse effects of train delays.

These conclusions were reached in KiM’s research of railway reliability and robustness. This report also explores the reasons for unreliability and the measures aimed at altering this situation. In a step-by-step plan, KiM presents a method for improved monitoring and evaluation of the effects of specific measures.
