Hinterland congestion and the role of waterway transport for seaport Rotterdam (English summary)

Container transfers in the Port of Rotterdam are expected to experience strong growth until 2040. In order achieve more efficient and sustainable hinterland transport, inland waterway and short sea shipping must gain a greater share of the container transport market.

Market parties have already initiated certain developments aimed at achieving this end. A number of measures have been developed to increase transport capacity to the hinterland, although they do not specifically advance the competitive position of waterway container transport. The measures sometimes promote inland waterway transport and/or road transport. The government is responsible for reducing administrative barriers and burdens and for streamlining procedures in the area of spatial planning. The government can also play a coordinating role in bringing together the various parties involved with container transfers.
