Determinants of propensity to fly (English)

Flying has become a common form of travel. The main reasons not to fly are fear of flying and the cost of flying. Youngsters fly more often than older people. Only above 75 years diminishes the propensity to considerably. Women fly as often as men except for business reasons. The group with the highest level of education (and income) flies the most.

The report bring to light two factors which hitherto hardly emerged in the literature : the impact of borders and the impact of language differences. Both Dutch and Belgians use airports in neighboring countries, but less frequently than on the basis of proximity alone can be expected. The border-effect is strongest as impediment to groups with low educational attainment. In Belgium the survey also revealed that language differences have an effect on airport choice.

This is shown by KiM-institute for Transport Policy Analysis by surveys in The Netherlands, Belgium and German regions bordering to The Netherlands.
