KiM’s history and position
The Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis (KiM) is an independent institute within the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. KiM supplies knowledge for use in the development and review of the ministry’s mobility policy. KiM also makes this knowledge freely available to other interested parties.
Establishment
KiM was established in September 2006. The former Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management (now Infrastructure and Water Management) needed systematic and well-substantiated analyses and studies of mobility policy that are not swayed by the political issues of the day. KiM delivers these analyses and studies.
Positioning
Organisationally KiM is positioned within the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. This ensures that our results are fully considered in the policymaking process. Being positioned within the ministry makes it easier to interact directly with the policy directorates.
Cooperation with partners
KiM works with policy assessment agencies, knowledge institutes, universities and Rijkswaterstaat Water, Traffic and the Environment (RWS-WVL).
We have multiyear agreements with the policy assessment agencies for cooperation in areas of common interest and for an effective and efficient division of tasks. We cooperate with them by:
- making the best use of each other’s expertise;
- participating in each other’s feedback groups;
- holding joint brainstorming sessions and critically reviewing each other’s products.
Outsourcing research
We outsource some of our research to commercial organisations and universities, and use the results in our research and knowledge-at-the-table activities.
